Ophthalmic Fellowship Training
The Fellowship of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) and the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), abbreviated as the IFOS/ICO International Fellowship, was inaugurated in 2001 to support promising young ophthalmologists in an essential phase of their training, to improve their practical skills and to broaden their views of ophthalmology.
Fellows completing the program are expected to bring the acquired knowledge and skills to their country of origin and take part in programs to preserve and restore vision in their respective country.
Conducted under supervision of a multinational committee chaired and realized by Balder P. Gloor, MD, (Switzerland) the Fellowships are offered to candidates who have completed basic residency training in ophthalmology, are preferably in or aspiring to a teaching position, and have a commitment to return to the same institution in their country of origin for at least two years subsequent to completing the fellowship.
Fellowships are generally of three months duration and are offered in Comprehensive Ophthalmology or in subspecialty areas.
More than 45 institutions have agreed to accept candidates who receive the IFOS/ICO International Fellowship. These institutions have identified the characteristics and strengths of their programs on the Internet to facilitate applicants from countries around the world.
The number of institutions offering to accept IFOS/ICO international fellows is certain to increase as the fellowship program becomes more widely known.
To begin the program, 66 IFOS/ICO International Fellowships were awarded in 2001–2003 to applicants from 28 countries.A large number of candidates have applied for the IFOS/ICO International Fellowship in 2003.
